Francis Sullivan had been sent to the Refuge. He had been scared, then. He had heard all the stories - things that could happen to kids when they were sent there. He had needed the food he'd stolen, he'd been hungry. They hadn't needed it that much. Not as much as he had.
He learned many things in the Refuge. He already knew some of the lessons - life wasn't fair, adults weren't always there to help you - but here, they were reinforced. He took a new lesson away from it - you couldn't depend on anyone but yourself. You are stronger than you think you are.
Francis Sullivan was a scared little child when he entered the House of Refuge. Jack Kelly escaped from it. He was no longer a child, he was strong, he was a leader.
Maybe one day he would even thank Snyder for it.
